AIA 150

AIA Baton Rouge’s AIA 150 Project, Florida Boulevard Master Action Plan (FLOMap) is underway and gaining momentum.

In January Dr. Darius Speith of the LSU School of Art, College of Design presented his study of the significant modern buildings on Florida Boulevard to the monthly meeting of AIA Baton Rouge. This very interesting presentation will be offered to the public and our government leaders in the near future in order to strengthen our “FLOMap” efforts.

Two of our AIA Baton Rouge firms, Washer Hill and Lipscomb and GD Architects have volunteered to take the lead in the preparation of the base maps for our project. Lisa Hargrave and Nelson Sanchez will be working over next few weeks to prepare the base maps that will be needed for our first charette. This charette will be composed of area stakeholders, business and government leaders and will take place near the beginning of April.

On March 16th the members of AIA Baton Rouge will be canvassing Florida Boulevard from I-110 to Airline Highway. The members will be given base maps and will verify site items such as: signage location, curb-cut locations, number and location of parking spaces, etc. The members will also be asked to photograph each lot and then create a photo-composite of their sector.

The event will begin with lunch (at a yet-to-be-determined location along Florida Boulevard) where final instructions will be given and any questions answered. The members will then go to their designated area and begin the inventories. March 16 should be a fun and productive afternoon.

Other opportunities for Membership Participation in FLOMap are as follows (final dates are yet to be established)

April 1 – April 15 - First Public charette
April 30 – June 15 - Second Public charette
June 15- July 30 - Presentation of Alternatives

From the project we hope to achieve the following goals:

  1. The establishment of an overlay district for the area of the study
  2. The creation of a traffic plan that relates to the North Boulevard Overpass
  3. Creation and implementation of planting and lighting schemes for the area

Anyone interested in participating in the inventory on March 16 should email Trula Remson at to sign up.

Our AIA150 project provides our membership a wonderful opportunity to collectively use our talents and skills to improve our community. Come be a part of it!
